Portable really matters — and most aren’t

“Portable” in this category is a spectrum. A heavy floor panel pulls double duty in a home but doesn’t survive a hotel night. A hand-held wand is genuinely portable but covers an area barely larger than a credit card. The middle of the spectrum — a slim panel with a built-in stand and a door-hook mount — is the design that survives both daily home use and regular travel.

Wavelength, irradiance, and the specs that actually move the needle

There are two red-light wavelengths that matter for daily wellness use: 660 nm (visible red) and 850 nm (near-infrared, invisible). A panel that combines both is the right call — red is absorbed by the surface layers and reads as glowing light, while near-infrared penetrates deeper into muscle and joint tissue. A pure-660 nm panel looks brighter but only does half the job. A pure-850 nm panel reads as invisible and is harder to use because you can’t see where it’s pointing.

Irradiance matters more than the LED count. Look for at least 80 mW/cm² at six inches — anything below that needs dramatically longer sessions to do the same work. For a 10-minute session, the published sweet spot for the NOVA panel is six inches from the front face; closer works but rarely improves the outcome.

Mounting and the difference between mounting modes

Three mounting modes — tabletop stand, door hook, wall mount — cover everything from a desk to a wall corner to a guest room. The door hook is the under-appreciated option because it lets you move the panel between rooms without leaving a screw in the wall. Anyone who’s rented an apartment knows why that matters.

A side benefit of the door hook is glare control: a panel that hangs at face height lets you stand or sit in front of it rather than lie awkwardly on a floor stand. Over time, the easier mounting is the one you actually use. We treat mounting variety as a habit-preserving feature, not a checkbox.

The 10-minute session that actually works

The published cadence for a dual-wavelength panel is short and regular, not long and occasional. Two to three sessions per week, ten minutes each, beats a single weekend-long session. Most people anchor a session to a daily anchor that has nothing to do with light — brushing teeth after dinner is the most common — and let red light become part of an existing routine rather than a new event on a calendar.

Eye protection and the questions people ask first

The standard question on a red-light panel is whether to wear eye protection. The short answer is: optional for the recommended session lengths, and many users prefer to close their eyes rather than wear goggles. The 660 nm light is bright but not damaging at typical exposure; the 850 nm near-infrared is invisible. If you’re light-sensitive, closing your eyes is the easier default.

The second most common question is whether the panel needs to touch skin. It does not. Light from a panel six inches away reaches the muscle you’re trying to hit; no need to press it to skin, no benefit to doing so. Far panels actually treat a larger area per session because the light cone widens with distance.

When not to upgrade

A more expensive panel almost never does more than a mid-priced one. The marketing claims — bigger coverage, more LEDs, deeper penetration — run ahead of the published physics. A 60 W dual-wavelength panel covers everything most home users need. Anything above 100 W is industrial. If a brand is selling you “deeper penetration” past 850 nm, that wavelength has its own safety profile and is a different category entirely.

Buy the durable mid-range panel, use it three times a week for a year, and upgrade only after you’ve outgrown the cadence. The same logic applies to almost all portable wellness tech: build the habit first, optimize second. A panel that lives in the closet doesn’t help your skin.
